As a writer and lover of books, I've made a practice of giving every kid in my family (including my own, of course), a book for Christmas. Always carefully selected for something I thought they would like and inscribed with thought. A few years ago, though, a couple of my nieces flat told me I really shouldn't bother, then a nephew on my wife's side of the family said the same thing. All three stopped reading (if they ever did) when they hit their teens. It was, to say the least, discouraging. On the other hand, I have two younger nieces who devour books--and not just Harry Potter. They even talk about them!
